There are many things in life which are presented as
being more luxurious than they actually are.
London, for example. It’s showcased as being a
millionaire’s paradise with exotic shops, magnificent architecture and being
more fun than ten minutes on a bouncy castle. But, in reality, it’s a clogged-up
lump of poisonous gases, smelly water and ignorant people.
Usually, it’s no different with chocolate: just because
it’s made by a posh brand and flogged for an absurdly high price does not mean
that it actually is anything special.
Tesco’s White Chocolate and Raspberry ice cream certainly
bucks that trend, however.
I was drawn to it for two reasons: firstly, it looked
nice; secondly, it had an affable price.
Each tub costs £2 (although an offer often allows two to
be bought for £3) and contains 900ml (whatever that means; but it’s about the
same size as a small cat – or a really big toad) of white chocolate flavoured cream
that’s been iced, intertwined with rivers of thick raspberry sauce and topped
with tiny mountains of white chocolate chunks.
So, it’s more adventurous than a 29p box of tasteless
vanilla.
Surprisingly, it was really easy to scoop out, which was
another sign of its greatness. Poorer quality ice creams predictably snap the
spoon and rip your hand to shreds just for the reward of extracting the tiniest
morsel from the frozen slab.
The raspberry sauce was plentiful throughout and added an
electrifying taste to the beautiful creaminess of the ice cream, without
masking the white chocolate flavour; certainly, the two combined sublimely.
The generous helpings of white chocolate sprinkles
scattered on top also provided a further delight by paradoxically working
wonderfully with the soft ice cream by adding a gentle crunch and packing a
punch of sophisticated sweetness.
Conclusively, it is a difficult product to fault. It’s
enjoyable, abundant and cheap, as well as capable of being eaten by the
shovelful or, significantly, as a luxury delicacy.
There is no other option but to rate the Tesco White
Chocolate and Raspberry Ice Cream as 5* out of 5.
