McVitie’s has been flogging “nibbles” of digestive
biscuits coated in white chocolate, which is perhaps one of the least festive
chocolate products I have ever seen.
In fact, I think it’s one of the least festive things
I’ve ever seen out of everything in the entire solar system.
Categorically, stencilling a few pathetic snowflakes onto
packaging does not automatically make something worthwhile for Christmas. I
don’t profess to be a weatherman, but snow is far more frequently seen outside
of Christmas time as opposed to during it. In the backend and backwards areas
deep into the north of Staffordshire snow is just as likely in July as it is in
January.
McVitie’s has also opted for the use of my most hated
phrase to describe their unimaginative chocolates: “limited edition”. They’ve
been in shops since September and are still being sold now, having been relaunched
since 2017. So, a limited edition product that you can only buy for
the majority of every year. EBay must be crashing under the strain of rampant
collectors.
But, realistically, no one’s going to eat the plastic
wrapping (unless you’re from Cornwall, obviously), so what were the actual
biscuits like?
Well, they were small. That was my immediate reaction.
Smaller even than my current tolerance of Mariah Carey. The packaging depicts
the “nibbles” as huge, dominating boulders and I reasonably presumed that they
would be the size of Maltesers; actually though, they’re disappointingly
smaller (a feat I didn’t even realise was possible).
At least the risk of choking is reduced. I’m convinced that
health and safety was the only reason behind McVitie’s Scrooge-ness.
To eat they were sweet, which was no particular shock
given that both white chocolate and digestives are sweet enough on their own.
The individual balls had been dipped in a fairly healthy amount of chocolate,
so a decent layer of skin surrounded the biscuit.
Perhaps because of the small size of the “nibbles” there
was a large quantity filling the bag (something that my permanently cynical
mind was amazed by), making them a great purchase for a cinema trip or lounging
around on the sofa gradually expanding until you fill the whole house.
Despite not being very inspiring, McVitie’s white
chocolate Nibbles provide a functional response to those all-to-frequent sugar
cravings with a plentiful supply.
Small balls: 3* out of 5.
